Abstract
Developing Young Professionals – Having trouble connecting with Generation Y? Do conversations about Twitter, Facebook, and the latest iPhone leave you scratching your head? This workshop will breakdown the essentials for communicating with young professionals effectively including; how to understand the learning style of this generation, and most importantly how to get them working most effectively for your company or department!
Specific Topics to be covered include:
– Work / life balance: Why Generation Y doesn’t like overtime.
– A new definition of hierarchy: Why clear expectations and limitations are a critical aspect of collaboration and team building.
– A greater purpose: Why Y needs to know “why”.
– Reaching Generation Y: How do you find young professionals to hire in the first place, effective marketing in the age of viral marketing.
Bio
Ilona Dougherty is a young professional, and for the last five years she has been the Executive Director of an organization with a staff of seven all under thirty. This hands-on experience has led her to share insight about youth engagement in workshops across Canada. In January 2004 Ilona co-founded Apathy is Boring, (www.apathyisboring.com) a national non-partisan organization that uses art and technology to re-engage youth in the democratic process. As Apathy is Boring’s current Executive Director, she has been featured on Canada AM, CTV National News, CBC The National, The Current, Mike Duffy Live, MuchMusic, Etalk Daily, and many more.
Ilona’s interest has always been in fusing art and social change, which she continues to make a primary focus. She has won numerous awards including
Vince Sirois Prize, Yukon Women’s Award, and she was featured in the book “Notes from Canada’s Young Activists” compiled by Severn Cullis-Suzuki.
Melding her backgrounds in the music industry and social engagement, Ilona has worked on events such as the Grey Cup and the Juno Awards and with
artists and well-known Canadians including Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, Jian Ghomeshi, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Nelly Furtado, K’naan, Jully Black, and Zaki Ibrahim. Ilona continues to speak around the country about innovative ways to reach 18 – 35 year old Canadians. Recent speaking engagements include the Community Foundations of Canada Conference, University of Toronto, McGill University, Ottawa University, University of the Streets Cafe, Yukon Volunteer Bureau, Volunteer Bureau of Montreal, and Association of Yukon School Councils.
Ilona Dougherty was raised by socially engaged parents in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Whitehorse, Yukon and currently lives in Montreal, Quebec.
