Professional Learning Day – Session #6

The Promise and Pitfalls of deploying Social Networking (Web 2.0) as a quality tool in the Public Sector

Since 2003 a wave of new web-based applications, commonly called web 2.0, has realized dramatic success and acceptance with individuals and organizations. This impact is now being felt in a government context, yet questions remain as to its applicability and value in the Government/citizen
relationship.

Much of the research to date has been focused on the social impact on individuals. However organizations and governments are coming to accept the use of these technologies internally but more work is required to uncover their impact in a government setting.

Using basic quality principles, this highly interactive session will explore questions such as “are web 2.0 applications relevant in a government context” and if so “how significant will this impact be”? In addition we will examine how these applications are currently being used in government and highlight the opportunities and challenges of implementing them.

Case studies and real life examples will be used throughout this workshop.
